German jazz trio provides silent film with new soundtrack
Bohren & der Club of Gore write new soundtrack for 'Le Révélateur' by Philippe Garrel

How do you avoid repeating yourself after 40 years if your band has a unique sound? The answer: with unbridled dedication and meticulous attention to detail. Experimental orchestration with limited instrumentation. A radical change of style is not in Bohren's script, fortunately.

The band was formed in 1992 in by Thorsten Benning , Morten Gass , Robin Rodenberg and Reiner Henseleit , who originally played in several fun-named hardcore punk bands such as 7 Inch Boots and Chronical Diarrhoea . In 1992 they made Bohren & der Club of Gore a crossover of jazz and ambient "unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down-tuned Autopsy sounds" . When Henseleit left the band in 1996, Christoph Closer his place - replacing the electric guitar with the saxophone.

After the departure of drummer Thorsten Benning in 2015, it remained a bit quiet around the remaining three gentlemen. Until 2020 their eighth studio album 'Patchouli Blue' was released, full of organ, saxophone, rhythm machines and analogue synthesizer. According to the German jazz trio themselves, 'Patchouli Blue' “four songs classic Bohren, three songs strange and four songs jazz lurkers” . The record catapults you into the sweaty clubs of the 1970s, embellished by Moog synths in the background (and sometimes in the foreground).
