Metropolis (1927)
Film by Fritz Lang
Restored version from the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation (2010)
Music by Martin Matalón (1995/2007/2010

The first science-fiction film ever, that was Metropolis by filmmaker Fritz Lang. A mega production from 1927, which would become not only the most expensive and famous German film of all time, but also one of the milestones in film history: the filming required no fewer than 36,000 extras and 500 miniature skyscrapers.

The Argentine composer Martin Matalon wrote a new soundtrack for Metropolis in 1995, commissioned by the IRCAM Paris. Using the rhythmic structure of the film as a frame, he weaves a fine mesh between image and sound, resulting in surprisingly colourful music that is close to jazz.

The story of Metropolis takes us to a futuristic city where the inhabitants are divided into 'thinkers', who live in luxury above ground, and 'workers', who toil in the mines. An uprising is inevitable…

Immediately after its premiere in 1927, the film was drastically shortened, and it wasn't until 2008 that an almost complete copy surfaced in an archive in Argentina, after which the Murnau-Stiftung was able to release a fully restored version.
