Der müde Tod (Tired death). Organ cinema at the NFM
Michał Kocot - organ - Narodowe Forum Muzyki, Main Hall

Program Info:
Tired Death directed by Fritz Lang is the last of the films presented as part of the holiday Organ Cinema. This time, silent frames of the work belonging to the classics of cinematography of the twenties of the last century will be enriched with organ improvisations by Michał Kocot.

Tired Death of 1921 is a lesser-known work of Lang - the leading creator of German expressionism in interwar film. It was based on a script by the director and his future wife - writer Thea von Harbou. The film in three acts tells the story of a woman who wants to save her beloved from death. The common denominator of the episodes is one existential thought - no one can before the final fate of living beings. The protagonist, who cannot come to terms with Lubego's passing, goes to the realm of death to ask for his salvation. Death, played by Bernard Goetzke, gives the girl an ultimatum - if she manages to save at least one of three human lives, the sentence will be lifted. The plot structure is then broken down into plots that take place in the Arab world, Venice, and China. The intriguing story highlights both elements of romance and inspirations from Gothic literature, especially horror novels. To this day, the film is considered a masterpiece appreciated by great filmmakers. Tired Death was the favorite film of the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, and Ingmar Bergman apparently drew inspiration from it, which can be seen perfectly in his Seventh Seal .
