Film Symphonic : The Great Escape live in concert
Nationaal Orkest van Belgie conducted by Dirk Brossé - Namur Concert Hall
Program Info: Elmer Bernstein - The Great Escape (Belgian premiere)
The Hollywood movie The Great Escape is based on a true story. During the Second World War, no fewer than 76 prisoners managed to escape from Stalag Luft III, a German POW camp in present-day Poland. Before that, the entire camp population worked for months on a tunnel of more than 100 meters long, mainly propped up with bed planks from the prisoners' barracks. Of the 76 people who managed to escape, only three managed to reach Allied territory safely after many wanderings.
One of the POWs who had helped dig the tunnel, but was unable to escape on his own, documented his experiences in a book published in 1950. That book, The Great Escape , formed the basis for a true blockbuster in 1963. The film of the same name by director John Sturges was nominated for several awards and won an award in the Best Actor category at the Moscow International Film Festival.
partly responsible for the gigantic success of The Great Escape Elmer Bernstein's music was Each character in the film has its own musical motif that is linked to the overall main theme of the film. Uplifting music expresses the audacity of the prisoners of war, while softer passages give them a deeply human, sympathetic face. The Belgian National Orchestra plays Elmer Bernstein's score under the direction of Dirk Brossé, while the cinema classic is played on the big screen.
