Film Fest Gent: Korean Composers
Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Dirk Brossé - Muziekcentrum De Bijloke
Program Info: On Thursday 20 October, Film Fest Gent presents the film music concert Korean Composers, a concert entirely devoted to the crème de la crème of Korean film music.
Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Maestro Dirk Brossé will perform live music by, among others, Jo Yeong-wook, the resident composer of filmmaker Park Chan-wook. He wrote the scores for, among others, Joint Security Area, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave (the latest film by Park Chan-wook, which is competing for the Palme d'Or in Cannes this year). The composer often records his music in our country with an orchestra conducted by Dirk Brossé, for example for the film Hunt (Lee Jung-jae), which will be played out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Jo Yeong-wook will also be present at the concert himself.
The music of Jung Jae-il also has a place in the concert. The composer has made a big breakthrough in recent years thanks to his scores for Bong Joon-ho's films Okja and Parasite and he also wrote the music for the Netflix series Squid Game. He also contributed to a film that was selected for this year's competition in Cannes: Hirokazu Kore-eda's Broker.
Focus on South Korean cinema: In the autumn, the 49th edition of Film Fest Gent will take a look at South Korean cinema. South Korean cinema has been a haven of quality, even subversive productions for many years and has only recently gained popularity. For example, the immense interest in Bong Joon-ho's Parasite or the Netflix series Squid Game is no longer a coincidence.
Reason enough for Film Fest Gent to focus on South Korea. It does so with a film music concert (Korean Composers), but also via a separate section in the film program (Focus on South Korean Cinema) and a retrospective (curated by Patrick Duynslaegher).
Wim De Witte, program director FFG: “South Korean cinema has long been one of the world's most interesting. That he is so popular now only confirms that. Moreover, South Korea is home to a very diverse film culture, with grand spectacles, dark policiers, delightful intrigues, but also smaller films such as Hong Sang-soo's. Their cinema is bursting with creativity and inventiveness, resulting in exciting genre films, among other things.”
