Karol Beffa, piano - La Seine Musicale
Program Info: Pianist, composer and improviser Karol Beffa continues his exploration of early cinema with three short films by Charlie Chaplin. It all starts with a slightly drunken evening ( Charlot comes home late ) where drunkenness helps, the objects suddenly come to life. This is sure to inspire our pianist with crazy rhythms!
The hallucination dissipated, Charlot regains his senses. To earn a few pennies, he goes to a boxing gym – a sport then prohibited – and acts as a sparring partner (the defending champion's training partner). Seeing the colossus arrive, Charlot would almost regret his audacity, but that's without taking into account his imagination and his malice. The scenes of antics follow one another in joyful confusion. Charlot Boxeur , a delight of acrobatics, announces the famous boxing fight of one of his masterpieces, the feature film Les Lumières de la ville , which Karol Beffa does his best to highlight.
Finally, in Charlot Pompier , the endearing clown in the bowler hat is not at the end of his troubles. At the barracks where he is asleep, he is awakened from his sleep by the training bell which he confuses with the alarm siren. Panicked, the Tramp rushes to get out the intervention vehicle. Then begins a long series of gags which offers the pianist a string of comical situations to set to music.
