Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival: Martin Grubinger
The Percussive Planet Ensemble, NDR Radiophilharmonie & Martin Grubinger conducted by Gabriel Venzag - Musik- und Kongresshalle, Konzertsaal
Program Info: Already in 2023, Martin Grubinger plans to retire his mallets and end his career. This summer, however, he can once again be experienced in all his versatility at the SHMF. This includes Fazıl Say’s “Concerto for Percussion”, which he wrote for the exceptional talent Martin Grubinger in 2019. Fazıl Say, gifted pianist, composer and always a mediator between the Orient and Occident, makes use of Western musical traditions and combines them in an exciting way with Anatolian scales or instructions like “in Istanbul gypsy style”. Grubinger is no less challenged when riding through the film scores of multiple Oscar winner John Williams, where one highlight follows the next: Williams is the composer of the soundtracks to Star Wars, Schindler’s List, E.T., Indiana Jones and Harry Potter and has thrilled generations of cineasts with his sonorous melodies. In addition to music, the artists Say and Grubinger are united by their commitment to freedom and social justice. It makes sense, therefore, that they will close the evening with Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 9”, a thoroughly political work, which at the time challenged and antagonized the leaders of the Soviet Union.
Program: Fazıl Say - Percussion concert John Williams - Special Edition Suite Dmitri Shostakovitch - Symphony No. 9 in E-flat major, Op. 70
