Aelita: Queen of Mars (1924)
Helena Basilova + Salvador Breed - Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ
Program Info: Aelita: Queen of Mars (1924) by Yakov Protazanov based on the novel of the same name by Aleksey Tolstoy
Soviet science fiction film with new electro-acoustic score
The futurism of the film Aelita , the first Soviet science fiction blockbuster, inspired pianist Helena Basilova and sound designer Salvador Breed for their new interdisciplinary project. Constructivist sets and costumes characterize this vision of the future, which transforms into an enchanting, timeless dream with a new electroacoustic score performed live.
Driven by a fascination for the universe and by marital jealousy, the fantasy of a revolutionary engineer in 1921 Moscow runs wild. In his imagination, the Queen of Mars contacts him via mysterious radio signals. A space trip to the red – but far from socialist-governed – planet leads on the spot to a revolt of exploited workers, following a good Russian example.
