Nana (1926) by Jean Renoir after a novel by Émile Zola with music by Baudime Jam
This very expensive film adaptation of Émile Zola's novel of the same name, about a frivolous young woman and the men she destroys materially and morally, was originally accompanied by classical music, with fragments by Jacques Offenbach and others. Composer Baudime Jam, who specializes in music for silent films, wrote a new score for Nana , which he performs with his string quartet Prima Vista and pianist Carmen Martínez-Pierret.
In the theaters of 19th-century Paris, the actress Nana is a sensation; her provocative appearance makes many admirers go crazy. But due to a lack of acting talent, she soon exchanges the stage world for a life as a courtesan. Jean Renoir's refined mise-en-scene and the passionate performance of Catherine Hessling – appropriate to the main character – make Nana melodrama of the highest order.
