A special symphonic spectacle

Phion and conductor Nikolai Alexeev take you on a true symphonic spectacle. With the film music of Shostakovich, Khachaturyan and Prokofiev. Intense, tragic and gripping, in Enschede, Arnhem, Zwolle, Deventer and Nijmegen.
Romance and Heroism

Phion dives into the world of movies. Not the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, but the rich film tradition of the Soviet Union from the last century. They were made by the hundreds, full of romance, heroism and a hefty shot of communist regime propaganda. Conducted by Nikolai Alexeev, the orchestra plays film scores by the three best-known composers from the Soviet Union. Othello from 1955 literally follows Shakespeare's play in text, with director Yutkevich portraying the tragedy in a brilliant cinematic way. The music of Khachaturyan follows that closely. Intense is his expression of the passion, jealousy and revenge from Shakespeare's tragedy about Othello de Moor and his beloved Desdemona.
Film music by Prokofiev

Pique Dame , based on Pushkin's novella, was never completed due to censorship, but Prokofiev's film score has been preserved. It perfectly captures the oppressive atmosphere of the story about a man who pays for his luck in the card game with death. Gadfly The is a grand costume drama about a nineteenth century Italian patriot who struggles against Austrian rule. You rarely see the film anymore, but the music that Shostakovich composed for it can often be heard in the concert hall, culminating in the famous Romance .

Aram Khachaturian - Suite 'Othello'
Dimitri Shostakovich - Suite 'Ovod' (The Gadfly)
Sergey Prokofiev - Suite from Pique Dame
