Berlin, symphony of a great city (Berlin: The Symphony of the Big City) by Walther Ruttmann 1927 / Germany / 1h05 / DCP / vostf
From dawn until dusk, Walther Ruttmann draws the portrait of the German capital. It all starts with a passenger train, the journey of which allows you to discover the city. Arrived at Berlin station, we can see the day breaking over the capital. With him, the crowd of workers who begin to fill the streets. For one day, the city vibrates to the rhythm of its inhabitants...
Walther Ruttmann declared in 1928: "Since I came to the cinema, I have always had the idea of doing something with living matter, of creating a symphonic film with the thousands of energies that make up the life of a big city. The possibility of such a realization presented itself the day I met Karl Freund who had the same ideas. (...) It's strange how Berlin tried to escape my efforts to capture its life and rhythm with my lens. (...), but the most difficult parts were those of the sleeping city. It is easier to work with movement than to give the impression of absolute rest and dead calm”.
quoted by Georges Sadoul, in the Dictionary of films
