The Supreme Hour (Seventh Heaven) the Frank Borzage avec Janet Gaynor, Charles Farrell, Gladys Brockwell 1927 / United States / 1h54 / video / vostf
The Vulmir sisters live in Montmartre in sordid conditions. One day, Nana, the eldest, an alcoholic, chases her sister Diane into the street and tries to strangle her. Chico, who works in the sewers of Paris, intervenes in extremis and controls Nana who flees. Diane tries to kill herself, but Chico now watches over her and invites her to the rooftops of Paris...
In this magnificent popular melodrama, Frank Borzage poetically links themes as strong as love, religion, hope, war... We follow the rise (in the literal sense) of the sewer worker Chico who becomes a sweeper of streets and who lives in seventh heaven (this is the original title) in an attic close to the stars. This social ascent is coupled with a spiritual ascent and it is the mystical aspect that gives the film its strength. The two lovers meet mentally every day at the same time. A dreamlike work whose poetry is carried by the extraordinary beauty of the images.
