Electrifying Strings

Program Info: Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro is recognised as a pure masterpiece and reflection of the brilliance of the composers phenomenal canon. Composed to show off the players’ virtuosity, this electric work sets a frenetic pace for the The Metropolitan Orchestra’s Electrifying Strings performance. Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams will then welcome virtuosic violinist Maria Lindsay to the stage for Tommy Tycho’s hauntingly beautiful Violin Concerto. The work which was written almost 10 years prior to its premiere performance which featured Maria Lindsay in April 2010, was also dedicated to her by the maestro himself.
Although Puccini is well known for his larger orchestral works, the melancholy Chrysanthemums is an exceptional example of his writing for string orchestra. This sombre work is a fine prelude to Hermann’s Psycho Narrative for String Orchestra. Eight years after Bernard Herrmann had completed his score to Alfred Hitchcock’s film Psycho, he created the narrative which closely follows of the original film from the leading lady’s impulsive theft, her subsequent murder, Norman’s disposal of her body through to his capture and incarceration, where in a cell he chillingly assures us in a final voice-over that he “wouldn’t hurt a fly.” Much like the original thriller, this final piece on the evenings program is a chilling finale sending electrical shivers down audience members spines.
