Program Info:
Jeff Beal - "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1920)

Concert as part of the ACHAVA Festival Thuringia

The programme "Sounding Utopias - #2021JLID", a multimedia mixture of silent films, jazz orchestra and vocal ensemble, takes place as part of the nationwide festival year "321-2021: 1700 Years of Jewish Life in Germany". The centrepiece is the silent film "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (1920) in a new setting by the renowned American film composer Jeff Beal (including "House of Cards"). The main film is complemented by several short original commercials from 1912 to 1927 by the Julius Pinschewer agency, newly set to music. With the selection of "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" and the short advertising films, the Federal Jazz Orchestra would like to honour the achievements of Jewish filmmakers of the Weimar Republic (including screenwriter Carl Mayer, director Robert Wiene, advertising film pioneer Julius Pinschewer) in the anniversary year.
