Carnival, magic dolls and a bear showman: welcome to the world of Petrushka, Igor Stravinsky's famous score, which brought music into the modern era. Created in 1911 at the Théâtre du Châtelet, as a ballet performed by Nijinsky, it is the work of a twenty-nine year old composer who stands out for its variety of rhythms, its sudden contrasts, its strong colours and its borrowings from popular folklore. The reworked 1947 version, designed for concert rather than ballet, is conducted here by Ben Glassberg. This farewell to Romanticism is almost contemporary with Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Violin Concerto, premiered the same year by Jascha Heifetz. The Viennese composer, exiled to the United States to escape Nazism, drew this post-romantic score from the themes of the film music he composed for Hollywood.

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) - The Flying Dutchman, Overture
Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) - Violin Concerto in D major op.35, the concerto has themes from the scores for the movies ANOTHER DAWN (1937), ANTHONY ADVERSE (1936) & THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (1937)
Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) - Petrushka (1947 version)
