»Sumurun« live film concert
Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg conducted by Burkhard Götze - Nikolaisaal, Großer Saal

Program Info:
Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg
Burkhard Götze, conductor
Knut Elstermann, moderation

A silent film by Ernst Lubitsch (Germany 1920)

Music: Victor Hollaender
Newly orchestrated by Burkhard Götze (first performance)

The oeuvre of Ernst Lubitsch, the workaholic who died much too early and who moved to America in 1922 and made a career in Hollywood, includes more than 70 films - including classics such as »Ninotschka« and »Rendezvous after the store closes«. Much less known today are his lavish period films and equipment spectacles made between 1919 and 1922: One of them is "Sumurun", an "Oriental game in 6 acts" with silent film stars such as Pola Negri and Paul Wegener. While searching for the lost original music by Victor Hollaender, the conductor and arranger Burkhard Götze recently discovered a piano reduction of "Sumurun", based it on a complete re-orchestration and is now making the result live for the first time in public with the silent film.
