Program Info:
Silent films with live music
Charles Chaplin "How To Make Movies" and "The Kid"

“Every day that you don't smile is a lost day.” This sentence from Charlie Chaplin, the film's first world star, says it all. But if you would do the legendary film-maker, comedian and composer injustice, you would reduce him to humour alone. The greatness of his cinematic art, which was always committed to human dignity and peaceful coexistence, unfolds precisely in the combination of funny and serious topics.

Chaplin's documentary film "How to make Movies" offers unique insights into the short, but all the more brilliant time of silent films a hundred years ago. Originally made in 1918, but not completed during Chaplin's lifetime and only reconstructed in 1982, it reveals Chaplin's charm and wit as a private person and perhaps shows his personality more authentically than any other film - and of course in his star role as "Tramp" with oversized shoes and Pants, two-finger beard and a bowler hat that was too small.

"A film with a smile, and - maybe - a tear." This is how Chaplin described his famous film "The Kid" in his own words: a silent film classic that is both tragic comedy and social drama. Chaplin as a foolish gentleman who suddenly becomes the foster father of an orphan has plenty of comical and tragic potential. 50 years after the publication, the very old Chaplin wrote a score for his film, which is characterized by the (late romantic) Hollywood sound and has a bittersweet sentimental tone.

Stefanos Tsialis directs the film concert: a real expert who has worked with almost 90 orchestras worldwide and has devoted himself to the performance of film music for years.
