Pickford’s last child role and possibly the actress’s finest film, which has a very slight twist here. A Night of the Hunter before the hour, a horror tale, Dickensian atmosphere in the key, built like an MB game from seven to seventy-seven years old. The sparrows are a dozen children exploited, martyred and held prisoner in muddy swamps by a couple of cruel farmers. Molly, the oldest in the troop, tries to protect them as best she can… even if it means fleeing into an alligator-infested swamp.
