Great spectacle. Very great spectacle. The small and the big story that intertwines, and Mary Pickford who alone symbolizes a courageous and determined America in the face of the Prussian enemy. The story of a young American woman turned spy, who will have to choose between her two suitors as the Great War rages on. A melodrama of war against a background of engagement and the opportunity for Cecil B. DeMille to deploy heavy artillery, notably during an impressive sinking sequence directly inspired by the torpedoing of the liner Lusitania by a German submarine.
