Faust (1926) with music by Willem Breuker
Ensemble Klang - Tivoli Vredenburg, Grote Zaal
Program Info: Faust (1926) by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau with music by Willem Breuker
For the cutting-edge special effects in Faust, director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau made wonderful use of everything the German UFA studios had to offer. He then went on to try his luck in Hollywood in 1927. Ensemble Klang revives the score that Willem Breuker performed with the Willem Breuker Kollektief until his death in 2010 for this film.
In his screenplay, Murnau combined the romanticized version of Goethe with older storytelling traditions about Faust and his pact with the devil. Breuker's composition is based on the unpredictable nature of Mephisto - the ultimate seducer, who alternately shows his most charming and his most terrifying side. A devilish role, played by Emil Jannings, who found a phenomenal opponent in Gösta Ekman (Faust).
