Orchestre de l’Opéra national de Lorraine conducted by Manuel López-Gómez - Opéra National Lorraine
Program Info: Orchestra of the Opéra national de Lorraine Manuel López-Gómez, conductor Gaspar Hoyos, flute
La Noche de los Mayas or Night of the Mayas was originally composed for the film by director Chano Urueta (1939): a story of love and blood, of culture shock, murder and sacrifice. Nicknamed the Mexican Stravinsky, Silvestre Revueltas shares with the composer of The Rite of Spring a crazy ritual energy that he draws from Mayan folklore. He infuses this emblematic work with rhythmic, percussive and violent music to the point of trance.
To escort Revueltas, a few composers who have also blurred the boundaries between so-called scholarly music and traditional influences. This is the case of his compatriot Arturo Marquez, who mixes elements of Mexican and Cuban folklore in his compositions. Cuban overture , which George Gershwin composed during a stay in Havana, is inspired by Caribbean rhythms. As for Astor Piazzolla, the Argentinian composer occupies, in the pantheon of the 20th century, a special place, at the confluence of tango and contemporary music: this concert is also the occasion to celebrate this immense artist whose centenary we are celebrating in 2021. .
