Film & Music: "Das Weib des Pharao"
MDR Sinfonieorchester conducted by Frank Strobel - Gwandhaus
Program Info: Eduard Künneke - Film score for "Das Weib des Pharao" ("The Woman of the Pharaoh") (Director: Ernst Lubitsch, D 1922)
"The wife of Pharaoh" was the penultimate film that Ernst Lubitsch made in Germany. With this work he wanted to finally convince the studios in Hollywood of his qualities. Lubitsch started here with a snappy satire of domination, located in an oriental fantasy country: a marriage is supposed to guarantee peace between two countries; but what was planned as a political move ends in love trading. Ernst Lubitsch ordered the original music for the film from Eduard Künneke. The high-quality composition underscores the characters' dramaturgy in the respective plot situations and thus shows Künneke's extremely varied ability, the name of which is usually only associated with the operetta »The Cousin from Dingsda«.
