Oscar-winning music of E. W. Korngold
Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Axelrod - Rudolfinum
Program Info: Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Adventures of Robin Hood Suite Richard Strauss - Burleske for Piano and Orchestra Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Symphony in F sharp
An extraordinarily talented native of Brno, Erich Wolfgang Korngold left his mark on history primarily as the composer of the characteristic genre of Hollywood film scores, with many composers, including the legendary John Williams, drawing on his legacy. For his return to the Radio Prague Symphony Orchestra, American conductor John Axelrod introduces Korngold’s personality in its wider context, as the author of the music for the film The Adventures of Robin Hood, for which the composer won his second Oscar, and as the author of classical music, specifically the post-war Symphony in F-sharp Major, dedicated to the memory of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The programme is rounded out by the Burleske from Korngold’s older contemporary, Richard Strauss, in which one of the most sought-after modern-day Czech pianists, Ivo Kahánek, will be performing. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Symphony in F# Opus 40 uses themes from ELIZABETH & ESSEX and CAPTAIN BLOOD in its slow movement and a theme from KINGS ROW in the finale.
