Program Info: Gürzenich-Orchester Köln Fabien Gabel, conductor Arabella Steinbacher, violin
Three works by an artist, a child prodigy who grew up to be a star composer. His homeland banned him because of his origins, and he invented film music in America. After the war ended, those who’d stayed in Europe found encountering the repatriate uncomfortable: they dismissed his music as outdated. How young the music in truth remained will be proven by conductor Fabien Gabel and violinist Arabella Steinbacher. Unlike the title “Sinfonietta” might make you think, it is a large-scale symphonic work, a late Romantic stroke of genius on the part of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who was just 15 years old at the time. His Violin Concerto, composed with material from various soundtracks and not without good reason called “Hollywood Concerto”, is regarded as an homage to the seductive sound of the violin. And the suite from the 1940 film The Sea Hawk shows Korngold as a musical storyteller at the peak of his abilities.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Suite from the film music for »The Sea Hawk« (1940)
Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Violin Concerto in D major 1945, the concerto has themes from the scores for the movies ANOTHER DAWN (1937), ANTHONY ADVERSE (1936) & THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (1937)
Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Sinfonietta in B major (1913)
