Faust (1926) with music from Willem Breuker
Ensemble Klang - Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ
Program Info: Willem Breuker - Faust (1926)
Mephisto’s unpredictable nature
For the advanced special effects in Faust, director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau once again made wonderful use of everything the German UFA studios had to offer. He then went on to try his luck in Hollywood in 1927. Ensemble Klang revives the score that Willem Breuker performed with this Willem Breuker Collective until his death in 2010 with this film.
In his scenario, Murnau combined the romanticized version of Goethe with older narrative traditions about Faust and his pact with the devil. Breuker's composition ties in with the unpredictable nature of Mephisto - the ultimate seducer, who shows himself alternately from his most charming and his most frightening side. A diabolical role played by Emil Jannings, who found a phenomenal opponent in Gösta Ekman (Faust).
