Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet
Houston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paolo Bortolameolli - Jones Hall

Program Info:
Houston Symphony Orchestra
Paolo Bortolameolli, conductor
Brinton Averil Smith, principal

“For never was a story of more woe…” No rendition of Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy captures the passion and depth of feeling—or the chasm between wide-eyed love and searing hate—more powerfully than Prokofiev’s. Korngold practically invented the lush, Hollywood sound we know and love, and his Cello Concerto began as on-screen music for the 1946 film Deception. Houston Symphony Principal Cellist Brinton Averil Smith draws out every ounce of its tender, opulent warmth, and shares music of French composer Darius Milhaud.

Felix Mendelssohn - Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Cello Concerto, started life in the movie DECEPTION
Darius Milhaud - Cello Concerto No. 1
Sergey Prokofiev - Excerpts from Romeo and Juliet
