Program Info: Grimethorpe Colliery Band 21st Century Orchestra - Chamber Ensemble Ludwig Wicki, conductor
Trevor Jones - Brassed Off
Experience the British brass cult film of 1996 on a big screen, while the Grimethorpe Colliery Band from Yorkshire and the 21st Century Orchestra - Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Ludwig Wicki plays the legendary film music live.
In the early 1990s, the young Gloria is sent to her hometown in northern England, where she is to investigate the economics of a coal mine for the Executive Committee. She begins to play with the in-house miner brass band led by the older but fierce Danny. Gloria hides from the band members that she works for the Executive Committee. The woman even starts a love affair with young Andy. When the bill is supposed to be closed, the members of the band see no sense in their pastime. Gloria and Danny renew the miners' self-confidence and train the band to compete in London's Royal Albert Hall. But then Danny collapses because of the consequences of his lung cancer and is hospitalized, after which his heavily indebted son Phil makes a suicide attempt. The band continues anyway, goes to London and surprisingly wins the competition. Danny refuses to accept the prize and criticizes the government's economic policy in a speech.
