Laurel et Hardy images and music
Orchestre Régional de Normandie conducted by Jean Deroyer - Théâtre de l’Arsenal
Program Info: Laurel & Hardy form one of the most famous comedy duos in the history of the 7th art. The tandem was formed in 1927 when the two actors were approaching forty and were already leading, individually, a successful acting career. Their success is considerable and they will no longer cease to appear together. In 25 years of career, they shoot more than 100 films. With this new film-concert program, the Normandy Regional Orchestra invites you to discover three of Laurel & Hardy's first short films. The commission for a new musical creation is entrusted to Cyrille Aufort, an eminent film score composer who had already brilliantly composed film concerts on Mickey Mouse and Charlie Chaplin for the ORN.
With this new film-concert project, the Normandy Regional Orchestra is showing three short films from the beginnings of the tandem: “The Battle of the Century” by Clyde Bruckman is one of the first since it was made in 1927. It gives rise in particular to an anthological scene of giant scaling, a hilarious symbol of Laurel & Hardy's burlesque comedy.
The other two films, “Long Live Liberty” and “An Eye for an Eye” were directed by Leo McCarey in 1929. Misunderstandings, chases, falls, fights are the timeless ingredients of the tandem to make young and old laugh. For Serge Bromberg, specialist in silent cinema, Laurel & Hardy “are the last holders of a truly visual art that is almost lost today.
